A Farmhouse With Ocean Views On New Zealand’s Banks Peninsula

The single-storey ‘Scrubby Bay House’ is situated on one of New Zealand’s iconic coastal sheep and cattle stations, and acts as a base camp for farm experiences. Whilst its location at the base of rolling hills makes it appear diminutive, the construction is sizeable and able to house up to twelve people. Constructed from macrocarpa cypress, the house shares the vernacular of more traditional farmhouses from the region. It features verandahs facing both the ocean and the land, and a stone hearth at the center of the home. Its exterior has been left untreated and so will weather over time, the architects explain that the building was conceived as “a piece of slowly aging driftwood”.
