The Moment Of Suspension, Jose Dávila’s Solo Exhibition At König Galerie In Berlin

This is his third solo show with the gallery; which is located within the walls of the former St. Agnes church in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district. The Guadalajara-based artist, also a trained architect, has created a series of delicately-balanced vertical pillars made from sculpted masses of stacked basalt stone, limestone, volcanic rock, and concrete. Some of the pieces are shackled together by heavy-duty ratchet straps; their illusory weightlessness appears to defy both gravity and form—presenting an equilibrium that challenges the obvious density of the materials Dávila uses. It’s as if each work might topple over at any moment, creating a tension that underpins our understanding of monolithic balance, and which imbues the high-ceilinged room with a quiet sense of unpredictability—ironic given the space’s architectural symmetry.‘The Moment Of Suspension’ will run at König Galerie until December 20, 2019.
