Disciplina Studio’s Debut Furniture Collection Is Made From Metal And Marble Offcuts

[ad_1]

The studio is led by designer Tomás Díaz Cedeño and encompasses furniture design, ceramics, and art direction. “‘Collection 01’ is an ongoing project that began six years ago,” the designer tell us from his home in Mexico City. “The idea was to use discarded materials from other projects as the main material—so broken marble and granite slabs in different colors,” he says. When we think of something as horizontal, we usually think in terms of a straight plane; a flat line that is parallel to the horizon. Díaz Cedeño’s work aims to challenge this notion by creating pieces with angled surfaces that divert away from the horizontal: his collection of side tables, dining tables, coffee tables, benches, and stools, have fractured sides that often sit at slanted angles. “The decision as to which kind of functional purpose the pieces could fulfil, was made by a combination of choosing specific surfaces at different heights,” he explains. The designer wanted to bring together contrasting elements in the collection, by applying new techniques to the ancient material of marble, and juxtaposing chromatic steel with veiny marble and granite—which together, make for an interesting appearance.
