Canadian artist Hannah Kwasnycia hand stitches abstract embroidery hoops inspired by nature. In particular, she is interested in capturing the organic shapes of moss, lichen, coral reefs, and mold—using a variety of stitches, colors, and beads to do so.

Currently based in New Zealand, Kwasnycia discovered the art of hand embroidery a little over a year ago. Since then, the 26-year-old artist has been practicing the craft during her spare time, quickly gaining recognition on Instagram for her unique designs. Kwasnycia’s conceptual hoops are made through experimentation and instinct, as she does each one entirely freehand. Due to her unplanned approach, no two pieces are alike. In fact, she draws inspiration from all colors and shapes of organic textures. So, while some of her pieces recall the lusciousness of green moss in their thick wavy stitches, others mimic the blooms of a coral reef with their three-dimensional loops.

Aside from Kwasnycia’s signature abstract patterns, the color schemes of her works are also notable. Each hoop is typically kept to a limited color palette, which the artist cleverly utilizes to enhance the variety of stitches used. By placing contrasting colors against one another, each pattern consequently stands out. Likewise, Kwasnycia’s technique of layering similar hues against one another seems to lead to a sense of lusciousness. The occasional adornment of beading adds a pleasing glittering element to the final picture.

You can purchase Kwasnycia’s original creations via her Etsy shop, and to keep up with her latest art, you can follow her on Instagram.
