On May 25, Minneapolis police officers arrested George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, on the suspicion that he bought cigarettes with a fake $20 bill. Seventeen minutes after officers arrived on the scene, Floyd was dead, having been pinned down by three officers—one with a knee on his neck for 8 minutes—as he pleaded for his life, saying, “I can’t breathe.” His murder, caught on video by bystanders and security cameras, ignited protests in Minneapolis against the injustice of police brutality towards black people.

Major cities across the country (and even the world) are protesting in solidarity with Floyd and Minneapolis as they also amplify the ways in which their police forces have inflicted profound violence on people of color. While many protestors took to the microphones and chanted as a crowd, participants also let their words be known through signage. Others, in a nod to football player Colin Kaepernick, took a knee to protest police brutality.

Scroll down to see photographs from peaceful protests around the U.S. as people stand up to systemic racism and police brutality, hoping to have their voices heard and to make real change.
