If you’ve ever been lucky enough to have a butterfly land on you, you probably enjoyed a brief close-up look at its beautiful colors and patterns. Catching a glimpse of these delicate insects is no easy feat, but British artist Georgie Emery creates a textile alternative to the real thing that you can look at for as long as you like. She hand-makes detailed embroidered butterfly brooches that you can wear on your favorite jacket—or simply hold in the palm of your hand.

Emery based her embroidery designs on a butterfly species called Vanessa cardui (also known as painted lady). Featuring patterned specks of brown, orange, red, black, and white, Emery captures the winged insects’ distinct markings in thread. The talented textile artist even makes each brooch according to the actual size of its butterfly counterpart, so they look even more real perched on your jacket lapel.

In addition to her brooches, Emery also creates butterfly embroidery designs that are framed within wooden embroidery hoops. From a vibrant buckeye to a speckled blue butterfly, each stitched design captures the intricate beauty of these stunning insects.
