Danielle Clough’s Unique Embroidery Idea Has Her Stitching in a Racket

We ordinarily expect embroidery to be stitched in a hoop, but artist Danielle Clough defies convention with her fiber artwork. For many years, she has been stitching plants onto classic tennis rackets and has remodeled the sports tools into handheld operates of artwork. From lovely blooms to prickly cacti, each and every piece is an electric powered mix of lively colour and layered stitched texture that has a painterly attractiveness.

We have marveled more than Clough’s work—particularly her What a Racket selection—for years, and in the course of this time she has continued to create on her racket repertoire. “At the moment I have been working on significant portraits and on a new ‘bouquet’ of rackets, wherever I have been experimenting with beads and threads,” she tells My Modern Fulfilled. “My sunflower racket may just be my new most loved! Sunflowers monitor the solar and I like how the beads do the same, changing as the gentle changes also.”

Attractive blooms are the concentrate of her get the job done. “My most new batch in the What a Racket collection is mainly flowers for the reason that I really like the colours and depth and symbolism they keep. Traditionally, bouquets are the embroiderer’s ‘go-to’ which is why I like that they stay stitched on these material-cost-free surfaces.”

The independence from common fabric is aesthetically enjoyable, but it is not without its struggles. “One of the challenges with them is that in essence you start out sewing into air,” Clough points out. “I do not use a backing material, so you have to hope you are putting the yarns in the correct spaces.” But when Clough will get it ideal, it pays off. “There is no undo button with a thing as time-consuming as embroidery, but this is also why, to me, it is really the most existing and wonderful medium.”
