” It was only the first week of the new year, and I was already fed up and grumpy. I had a pile of paperwork to sort through, a backlog of work to get done and more than a few bills to pay. I was asked to stop everything and urgently draw a cute greeting card for a friend (as a favour… of course) and before I knew it I had drawn an angry duckling saying QUACK F***ING QUACK. It made me laugh out loud and I shared it online. It quickly became apparent that it was making a few other people smile too, and so a promise was made. No matter what else life would bring in 2020, I would set aside enough time each day to draw and post a daily grumpy animal. This book is the unstoppable force of 100 days of grumpy animal drawings.”

When asked whether Coco thinks the references were coincidental or deliberate, she said that the ones inspired by René Magritte’s and Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings were probably done on purpose. “Throughout my research, I realized how much René Magritte inspired the cinema industry. I think also that some of them are simply coincidental, and aren’t they fascinating?”

For most of us, the COVID lockdowns represented a time of confinement and restriction. For Sayna Soleimanpour, the Iranian photographer also known by her Instagram handle @saynarte, the lockdowns also meant a sudden and unprecedented freedom to move through the Turkish city she lives in as she – and the other women there – never have before.
“Here in Turkey, it’s considered shameful for a woman to wear a skirt in public, or even to use her body freely,” she says. “If you’re feeling sexy one day and decide to take a walk down the street wearing an outfit that expresses that, you’ll be met with unwelcome glances and harassment – and sometimes even assault. If you’re going to wear something sexy, you’d really only do it at home.”
But with the lockdown came a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to venture out in public wearing exactly what she wanted – without having to worry about people’s reactions or judgements. “We were under a strict curfew here in Turkey, but I applied for permission to go outside. I traveled around the streets freely in the outfit I wanted to wear, and took self-portraits all over Istanbul. I’d normally experience violence for wearing something like this, but the ones who’d be making the aggressive or sexist comments were stuck inside,” Sayna says. “I had the city all to myself. And yes, this series was supposed to be fun. But it also represents my fight.”

American comics first came to Glasgow as ships’ ballast. In the sixties it seemed every other corner shop had a stash of these glossy-covered comics displayed on carousels or placed beside their tamer British counterparts like Beano, Topper, or Dandy. With comics like Thor, Hulk, Superman and co. it was difficult to keep collecting consecutive numbers as it was pot luck as to what arrived in the shop every month.

The clues were in the comic-book adverts for X-Ray specks, with which you could see the bones beneath your skin, or what was hidden under a layer of clothing; Sea Monkeys you could train who would entertain for hours; a mini-Polaris Nuclear Submarine with which to patrol local waterways; Aurora movie monster kits; and reinvent yourself like Charles Atlas or Arnold Schwarzenegger so no-one would kick sand in your face.

After the first corona mask project in the spring, I wanted to hang up the masks in the word’s truest sense. But during the second lockdown in Austria, the experiences in my own environment with the coronavirus and the events of the first days of November prompted and motivated me to continue the mask series.
While in spring, it was the motivation to keep those around me happy, since this lockdown, I see it as a primary goal to motivate people to wear the mask, not by warning, but with humor and charm.
In this lockdown, a new mask is created every day and presented via various social networks. The motifs make use of current global events, political decisions, or simply the artist’s experiences. In addition to the terrorist attack in Vienna and the USA’s presidential election, it is mainly film characters, pop art motifs, and heroic figures that Kretschmer embeds in these days’ current events. Each mask is unique, and behind each, there is a statement that they are not intended to warn. They are intended to entertain, but above all, to motivate. And not only to take the mask requirement seriously, but with humor, to take these days a little more calmly, enjoy the time with the family, and support local trade and the social environment.
How long the mask project will be continued is still unclear; the last mask will probably be designed when the new mask requirement ends. Today, a total of 100 masks have been designed; how many will follow is not yet in sight.”

Anubis is the Greek name of the god of death, mummification, embalming, the afterlife, cemeteries, tombs, and the Underworld, in ancient Egyptian religion, usually depicted as a canine or a man with a canine head. Archeologists have identified Anubis’s sacred animal as an Egyptian canid, the African golden wolf. The African wolf was formerly called the “African golden jackal”, until a 2015 genetic analysis updated the taxonomy and the common name for the species. As a result, Anubis is often referred to as having a “jackal” head, but this “jackal” is now more properly called a “wolf”.
A painter, creator of comic art and illustrator, Joanna Karpowicz is a graduate of the State Secondary School of Visual Arts in Kraków, as well as the Faculty of Painting at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts, where she received her diploma in the studio of Prof. Leszek Misiak in 2001. She lives and works in Kraków.

Philip Royer, from Montreal, professionally goes by his creative name, London. He works as a tattoo, make-up, and performing artist. He’s had an “obsession with vampires” since childhood, finding their aesthetic “magnificent.”
“If I had to describe my style, I would say gothic.” But he has focused many of his modifications on resembling the bloodsucking creatures, as “they’re immortal.”
London has over 70% of his body tattooed and wants to become fully covered in ink. He’s had facial reconstruction surgery on his jaw and plans to get more extreme procedures in the future. London doesn’t regret any of the changes he has made to his body, saying that he finally felt “handsome” after getting his first facial tattoo.
