According to an artist: “After 12 years of experience drawing realism with graphite pencils, I decided to create this colorful project named Meronpan. I use diverse techniques to illustrate animals and pets, most of them in Japanese scenarios.

The name Meronpan (a Japanese melon flavored bread that looks similar to the sweet Mexican bread “concha”) ​was chosen to symbolize the fusion of my Mexican and Japanese heritage, also to represent the heartwarming and delicate process involved in creating each personalized handmade illustration.

I follow the same steps to create every illustration. I begin by tracing them with graphite pencils to then ink them. Later on, I color them with watercolors and water based markers, among other materials. Sometimes, if necessary, I finish the illustration by correcting some details digitally.”

According to an artist: “It started as a Christmas gift to my wife, who loves the “Woman Yelling at Cat” meme, and has unfolded into an art project called “Memes of the Floating World.” In this strange dream world, classic Japanese woodblock print art and legends mash up with memes, dead and living, and internet lore from the past and present.

Hungarian artist Peter Szucsy has a very unusual yet fascinating hobby – he assembles all kinds of mechanical parts from vintage watches, cameras, and medical equipment into intricate steampunk spider sculptures.

Peter Szucsy has worked as an art director, creating all kinds of virtual creatures and monsters for video games, but one day he decided to start bringing some of these figments of his imagination into the real world as well. Every week, he heads to a flea market near his home in Budapest, where he looks for all kinds of vintage mechanical parts he can use to create his menagerie of steampunk spiders.

“I have made many creatures, monsters, create several world in almost all of the style in the virtual world,” Szucsy wrote on his website. “But few years ago I felt it is about time to create something different. So… I left my computer, and made lots of my ideas come alive in the real world.”

The world, especially in the crazy year of 2020, never fails to leave room for social criticism—it’s like you don’t even have to try hard to find things you can ironically poke at. Italian artist Elia Colombo, known to social media as “gebelia,” transfers the flaws of our modern society to conceptual illustrations. They are uncomfortable, thought-provoking, and with a good dose of irony and humor.

Colombo has been preparing more food for thought since our last post about his artwork, so we hope that your mind is hungry.

“2019 was a controversial year. I’ve been splitted between hard working times and ruinous personal projects. I experienced the love and the hate of the community, as well as the privilege of getting censored. All of this strengthened my perception of the social media phenomenon and my opinion on mass intelligence: they’re mostly unaware, mastered by fear and ignorance. 2020 is right behind the corner: I wish you all the best for the upcoming decade.”
