Makeup Artist Uses His Face And Body As A Canvas To Recreate Famous Paintings

Many people might still not recognize makeup as an art form, but talented artists all over the world keep proving that amazing things can be created using only the power of makeup.

21-year-old Nils Verberne, also known as Lithunium Snow, is an exceptional makeup artist and model who describes himself as a “weird kid from the Netherlands doing his best with makeup and a camera.” And his “best” is totally working out for him as he has 579k followers on Instagram as well as 315k subscribers on his Youtube channel.

Along with other impressive makeup looks, Lithunium Snow used only makeup to recreate some of the most famous paintings in history on his own body. Inspired by iconic artwork by Hokusai, Vincent van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, and Gustav Klimt, he transforms parts of his body into art with extreme attention to detail.

In March 1995, artist Bryan Lewis Saunders made a promise to himself to create a new self-portrait every day for the rest of his life. To this day, he has kept this promise; Saunders has made nearly 12,400 of them.

While this alone sounds like quite the experiment, in 2000, he set out to create an even more radical subseries within the project. The artist painted tens of self-portraits whilst being on mind-altering drugs, and so, “Under The Influence” was born.

Within weeks, he became lethargic and suffered mild brain damage. Saunders even became a frequent guest at the hospital. Nevertheless, he continued drawing. The artist sought “experiences that might profoundly affect his perception of self” and when you see just how different each of the drawings from “Under The Influence” is, you can’t help but think he succeeded. Saunders said the brain damage resulted in “psychomotor retardation and confusion,” but at least it was repairable. He’s still conducting this experiment, but over greater lapses of time; though now he only takes drugs that are prescribed to him by a doctor.

Now have a look at the cool art, but don’t try this at home.

“The drug series itself began in 2000 when I moved into an 11-story building with the idea that I would make a documentary on all of the interesting characters there,” Saunders told Bored Panda in a statement. “The building is well-known in Johnson City for its creeps and loonies.”

After moving in, however, a really difficult period in the artist’s life postponed the series. One of his good friends died in a fire, another tried to shoot himself in the head but ended up with brain damage and permanent confusion, and while he was still in the hospital, Saunders’s lung collapsed.

Ativan / Haloperidol (Doseage Unknown In Hospital)

To unwind, he went hiking with his buddy Brandon Bragg, something Saunders hadn’t done before.

“It was incredible,” he said. “I had 5 pounds of art supplies with me! Every day, I saw tons of beautiful things in nature. I’m from the city and so every new kind of bark I saw, or toadstool, or wild animal gave me such a rich wealth of phenomena to draw and see myself in a totally different world. That experience was truly miraculous and healing. (To this day, that book is my favorite of all of the self-portrait books.) … While Brandon and I were hiking one day, he asked me, ‘Whatever happened with that documentary you were going to make with the veterans and the loonies?’ And I told him how everything had happened so fast with the tragedies and how I thought the people would be really interesting to document, but in fact they were all on drugs, suffering in solitude, some too obese to physically leave their apartment, and for many, it was all they could do to get out of their recliners 3 times a day. I told him how when I first moved in, a paraplegic in a wheelchair showed me an encyclopedia of pills and said he could find at least one of every kind of pill in that book in the building and that book was huge.”

    Morphine IV (Doseage Unknown)

When Saunders and Bragg got back to NY, the artist unknowingly became very dehydrated, started hallucinating, and had a psychotic break during which he ditched his friend at a monastery because he thought he was trying to poison him. “I took the Greyhound straight back to Tennessee, where I had an epiphany. I thought, not only am I going to draw myself every day, but I’m also going to do a different drug every day. After all, there was one of everything in the building… And that was when I officially started the project.” It was a combination of dark sadness and easy access that led Saunders to satisfy his drive to experience as many different things as possible.

    Bath Salts

He said the images first went viral in January 2011, and it was “excruciatingly distressing and morbidly terrifying.” Saunders got quite a few hate mails. “They either wanted me to commit suicide myself, or they themselves wanted the honor of putting me down like an animal. Sleazy companies came out of the woodwork too,” he recalled. “This time around it’s been so much nicer and friendlier.”

    LSD

But the popularity of this one experiment is pretty big. “It gives people an opportunity to discover some of the other things I do or have done as well. Things that I feel are a lot more important, both socially and artistically. And it’s also opened the door to communicate with some other incredible people who feel that they are alone in the world, and in one way or another are suffering and having trouble. I’m older and like to think I can be of some help in that department.”

NEW DAWN Imagines A Speculative Future Of Nature, Art And Technology In The Year 2070

    [ad_1]

The project explores the visual and creative potential of a speculative organic future. In the digital showroom, art, graphic design, CGI animation, dance, and sound design converge to enable new object-related visual experiences, centered around one object: the glove. The space’s architecture was developed by Adrian Bolog, with exhibition design and curatorial narrative by Maximilian Mauracher. Alongside 17 other 3D studios and artists, IGNANT production created a CGI rendering that explores the glove as a device for enabling holistic experiences in a discursive, speculative future. This envisaged future is as follows:

It is the year 2070, and humankind has achieved new heights in aesthetics, science, and technology. Artificial intelligence has granted humanity the ability to design unique ecosystems, creating an organic and synthetic future where art and technology no longer follow traditional canons. New tools enable new creations: It is in the hand of the newly enhanced humankind.

The digital exhibition is accompanied by a video produced and directed by Berlin-based creative studio acte™, with choreography by Franka Marlene Foth, sound by Ozelot Studio, and creative direction by Tobias Faisst. In the performative video, contemporary dancers move with fluidity against a backdrop of bold color; it is as if their gloved hands have an animacy effect. “The performed garment acquires its own identity and agency through the act of stage representation,” explains a statement from Felipe Duque. “Following the notions of desire, animacy and sentience, the actant character of NEW DAWN’s garments activates a person’s body, conscience, and her surroundings, suggesting moods and atmospheres.”

The Superb 'Stillness in Motion' Sculpture by Olga Ziemska

Stillness in Motion: The Matka Series is an ongoing body of sculptures by Polish artist Olga Ziemska. To date, the artist has installed several of these sculptures in various places including: The Centre of Polish Sculpture in Oronsko, Poland; The Daejeon Museum of Art in South Korea; and even an art festival in Romania.

“The body of work explores the concept of place. In this ongoing series I use locally harvested trees that grow native to an area to create a female figure in different countries all around the world. The word “matka” in Polish means mother, a person that is significant to the idea of place, origin and our first physical environment—the womb. Through the repetition of the human form, the subtle characteristics of each environment will emerge naturally and visually. This body of work is ultimately a celebration of the diversity of place and a homage to the similarities that underlie all things at their core,” she says.

Body art is, when you get down to it, a form of storytelling — each piece of ink contributes to a narrative that can encompass a single tattoo, or an entire body. Photographer Reka Nyari explores and subverts traditional ideas of beauty and gender, recontextualizing the aesthetics of sexuality through a female gaze; her “Ink Stories” continues that work via a series of sometimes pointed, sometimes erotic, and always fascinating images of tattooed women and the stories they tell with their bodies.

Artist Creates Sensual Portraits Characterised By The Female Presence Of Empowering Women

As we all know, art has always been one of the centre humankind’s interpretations of emotions and perceptions, it keeps us alive and recently, new studies discovered that being creative keeps our well being steady. Between a way of contemplation and a measure of opposition towards social rejections and stereotypes, art is unmistakably a daily inspiration for every single soul.

Nowadays, art is innovative, relates stories of changes and open minds to new possibilities. Throughout eccentric, straightforward and unconventional images, artists aim to convey direct messages to viewers, to diminish what society inflicts us as incorrect and unacceptable. Some artists alternatively, send a message of empowerment with a gentle and a pure taste, implementing peaceful and melodic approaches.

Habiba Green indeed creates realistic portraits, characterised by the female presence of empowering women. Her minimalistic style is designated by fine lines and a three-coloured chromatic scale, mostly using watercolours, markers, oil painting, pencils and digital tools. She also organises commemorative events related to feminism, gender identity and body positivity, like: What do you see?, 2016 in London and SHE 2018 in Barcelona. Her work is full of emotions and focused on film, music and literature, it also has been shown in several publications and brands such as Sony Music, Chanel and Smirnoff.

Below you can view her illuminating, delicate and elegant artworks, where you will plunge yourself into the gentle female world…

Artist Jon Henry started working on his photography series Stranger Fruit back in 2014. What began as a protest against senseless police killings of black people ended up being a lot of other things, too. Most notably, it’s an introspective mirror that allows viewers to examine their own take on the subject.

The people we see in the photos are real mothers, posing in their own environment with their actual sons, reenacting what it must feel like to lose them. The mothers are isolated. Alone. Empty. When the trials are over and the protesters have gone home, when the news cameras are gone and nobody is around anymore, the mother remains on the site forever. There’s no peace of mind; the scene will always haunt her.

These mothers understand that this could happen to their family at any moment.

From a rural area in North Minneapolis to a street corner in Jersey City, Henry has visited a lot of places for the series. “I chose these locations because I could find subjects there,” the photographer told Bored Panda. “The locations are where the families live and work. I’m looking for areas that describe the city and/or state from a geographical and architectural point of view.”

Even though these shots are staged, they radiate authenticity. “The families choose whatever they are comfortable with wearing, so that helps the natural feel,” Henry explained. “The comfort level with the family also helps the feel of the images. These aren’t actors, they are family that [really] consider these issues.”

The photographer wanted the mothers to pose deadpan to appeal more directly to the viewer. And they do. They look directly in our eyes, as if asking, how do we feel and what are we going to do about this. “The viewer can make their own decision on how to respond to the images,” Henry concluded.

In Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi once said “Your eyes can deceive you, don’t trust them.” And it seems that nothing represents that as well as the artwork “Moving Dunes” created by the Canadian architecture firm NÓS.

The dunes bend the viewer’s perspective in such a way that it forms a deceptive path mimicking patterns you’d see on sand in a desert. The huge chrome spheres add to the illusory effect and the result is absolutely mind-bending.

According to the NÓS, the artwork is “an experiential mirage in the heart of downtown Montreal that interweaves real and virtual.” It was created as part of the 2008 exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts titled “From Africa to the Americas: Face-to-face Picasso, Past and Present.” Drawing inspiration from the cubist painters, the illusory artwork was installed on the Avenue de Musée as part of the yearly call for artists.

    Alex Lesage

To find out more about this mesmerizing project, Bored Panda reached out to Charles Laurence Proulx, the architect behind the “Moving Dunes” and co-founder of NÓS. Charles told us that the idea came as the team had to create “a bi-dimensional installation to maintain vehicle access across the street, but we wanted to give the street a topography, a volume.” The team was inspired by “the graphic technique of cubism to create the illusion (trompe-l’oeil) of depth.”

    Raphaël Thibodeau

Charles also recounted the whole process from the concept to the final installment. “First, we did a 3D model of the topography and spheres with our architectural modeling tool and with a simple pattern applied to the topography. Then, we worked with the museum to choose a graphic pattern and colors to match the exhibition branding and identity.”

Finally, the team at NÓS did a real-scale productions drawing. “At last, we mapped the pattern on the the street as a giant stencil.”

    Raphaël Thibodeau

Charles said that the project came about as the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts proposed an artwork on this street, Avenue de Musée, which is right next to the museum. It was created as extension of the temporary exhibit “From Africa to the Americas: Face-to-face Picasso, Past and Present at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA).” Just like cubist painters, the artwork is built to question the role of perspective in visual representation.

One of the methods used to create the distorted sense in the piece is “anamorphosis.” The term refers to “the distortion of the subject reconfiguring itself according to the position of the body in space.” Moreover, “through this process, ‘Moving Dunes’ introduces the public to the essence of this approach in a playful way.”

The optical piece was designed by a team of 4 artists working at NÓS, which is a Montreal-based company that brings together professional architects and artists attached to several disciplines and diverse cultures in order to share and innovate through common projects. The overall budget for the piece was $50,000, according to the statement.
