There was a time when Photoshop contests were frequent among digital artists. Specialized sites brought their members daily fun themes to challenge their creativity and talents. The company Design Crowd has carried the torch since 2014, and continued these contests.

Here is a contest theme called “Exaggeration City” where people had to use Photoshop to create giants living routinely with people. Here are the best works selected out of 17 contests in total.

The level of these works is not professional by any means, but they’re sufficiently entertaining and fun. All of the Photoshop greats had to start somewhere, and contests like this are a great ground for practice.

The dark wooden sculpture of coronavirus was burned in Voronezh, Russia. It was made by the famous wood carver Alexander Ivchenko. He decided to cut the figure COVID-19 after his whole family had got over infection.

“One morning I woke up with a thought: what could a coronavirus sawn from a tree look like? I was drawn a kind of trinity. The balloon is our planet. On one half of the continents, the oceans. The second half is the mask of death, which devours the planet. And all together – the virus with its offshoots. It is true that the offshoots are not mace-shaped, but the wrong ones are rhizomes. This is more terrible,” – explains Alexander.

Ivchenko used a birch tree for his work, which was brought to him from Lipetsk region two years ago. It took about two hours to saw the “coronavirus”. Alexander confessed that it was not a pity to burn it at all.

“Those, who were sick, know this feeling of broken glass in the lungs or even hot, undersized bricks. But what is strange… I have been ill before. And I have been sicker – that’s for sure. But it’s been a long time since I was so scared,” the sculptor continues. “Everyone is tired of the unknown, tired of being afraid. The action, at least some of it in itself is a great relief. So, according to the plan, after burning, there should be an abyss of fear. At least – mine. At the most – for those who looked at it.”

“Originally, it was a very individual action for me. That’s why I climbed to hell on the eco-trail. There are no roads even there. When they started calling and asking for permission to shoot, I reasoned as follows: if people need to see what I did, let the universe deal with it.”

A metro train serving the town of Spijkenisse, near Rotterdam, has crashed through the barrier at the end of the track and only the sculpture of a whale has stopped it plummeting into the water below.

The train is now suspended 10 metres above a footpath, thanks to the whale’s tail, and is likely to remain there for some time. ‘We are trying to decide how we can bring the train down in a careful and controlled manner,’ a local safety board spokesman told broadcaster NOS.

The crash happened just before midnight and woke people living in the nearby houses. ‘It was a noise that lasted two or three seconds,’ one said. ‘I realized that there was something on the tail… I thought “something very odd is happening here”.’

The sculpture Saved By a Whale’s Tail, is made of polyester and is the work of Maarten Struijs. The tails were placed in the water at the end of the metro tracks in 2002.

Halloween, the high holy day of spooky season, has a sort of Spooky Scale that runs the gamut from the casual black cat, full moon, or harmless jack-o’-lantern to the extremes of disembodied corpses, chainsaw massacre enactments or, even scarier, the thought of paying bills every month under the terror of COVID-19.

Local artist Steven Novak finds himself comfortably at the “horrifying” end of the scale, as his East Dallas neighbors and the Dallas Police Department will surely attest.

“I’ve always been up to hijinks like flying ghosts or 7-foot tall snow sculptures of myself, so if I was gonna do Halloween, it was obvious that it should be hyperreal,” Novak says. “No lights, fog machine, or camp … something that would really freak people out walking by in the dark. So I whipped up some dummies and slung 20 gallons of blood all over.”

“I’m most proud of the wheelbarrow tipped over by the street full of Hefty bags, looking like a failed attempt to dispose of the dismembered bodies in the middle of the night.” Novak says. “A kid walked by and asked me what happened to them; I said they ate too many Skittles.”

“It was raining a lot and washing the blood away so I indefatigably ‘watered’ the bodies every morning for a while to the dismay of early dog walkers and joggers saying as they passed ‘Watering the bodies!’”

While some people embrace Halloween hijinks, Novak gives them a bear hug. Only it’s a zombie bear with blood pouring out of its mouth. Novak’s decorations have brought the police to his house multiple times.
