A new exhibition at London’s Tate Modern celebrates Yoko Ono’s trailblazing work as a conceptual and performance artist. YOKO ONO: MUSIC OF THE MIND is the largest exhibit in the UK to examine her work by celebrating key moments in her career. Over 200 works by Ono are on display, including participatory pieces, films, installations, music, and photography.

Some of her most powerful and talked about work is included in the show, such as her 1966 Film No.4 (Bottoms). The controversial film, which features flashing images of people’s behinds, was initially banned in the UK. There is also a nod to her acclaimed 1964 performance, Cut Piece, where the audience was invited to snip the clothes from her body.

Visitors are now invited to participate in several creative exercises in the exhibition. In Wish Trees for London, people are asked to share their messages of peace. For Add Colour (Refugee Boat), guests are asked to paint their hopes and beliefs inside an all-white room. This timely installation is a continuation of a series first conceived by Ono in the 1960s and recalls her dedication to political issues.

The final room is dedicated to motherhood with a two-part work, My Mommy is Beautiful. After viewing a series of photographs Ono has strategically placed in the room, visitors are invited to decorate the walls with their own thoughts about their mother or even pin up photograph. In this way, throughout the course of the exhibition, the room will become a tribute to motherhood.

Throughout the exhibition, one is reminded of Ono’s forward-thinking mind and her courage to tackle important issues even when it was unpopular to do so. YOKO ONO: MUSIC OF THE MIND is on view at Tate Modern until September 1, 2024.

Mount Vesuvius erupted in the yr 79 CE. Lava coursed down the slopes although ash erupted into the sky, blanketing the nearby area in a veil of scorching loss of life. Civilians in Pompeii had been drowned in the ash, their bodies uncovered quite a few hundreds of years later as cavities in the calcified layers of ash that preserved their crouched and protective stances. Frescoes on setting up walls have been also properly preserved. In close by Herculaneum, volcanic materials blanketed a wealthy noble’s villa. Within the library of the residence, treasured scrolls had been carbonized by the heat. On the lookout like oddly formed lumps of coal, they were being identified in 18th-century excavations. Nevertheless, studying the very long shed terms has been extremely hard until a short while ago. The major progress has just been built, with a few remarkable pupils making use of AI to choose property the grand prize of the Vesuvius Problem for illuminating in excess of 2,000 characters.

The Vesuvius Challenge was started by Brent Seales, an American computer scientist, and entrepreneurs Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross in March 2023. It has available above a overall of  $1 million in prizes for successive techniques on the journey of deciphering the ancient scrolls. The method began with CT scans of the carbonized rolled parchments. These ended up designed public, and with Seales’ X-ray tomography and personal computer eyesight technological know-how which “unwrapped” them, the recreation started. The to start with endeavor was to decipher the carbon ink upon the carbonized surface area, which Seale himself labored upon.

Then in Oct 2023, Luke Farritor—an American student—found the very first legible entire world amid the rubble. It was “porphyras,” ancient Greek for “purple.” Now, Farritor has nabbed the grand prize as portion of a workforce with Julian Schilliger, who scientific studies robotics in Switzerland, and Youssef Nader, an Egyptian PhD university student studying in Germany. The younger learners uncovered every other from all around the world to blend their abilities in synthetic intelligence, pulling lengthy several hours to decode the historic texts. Their algorithm was equipped to “read” about 2,000 Greek figures from the charred remains of the scrolls. This effortlessly nabbed them the prize of $700,000.

The translated textual content discusses meals, new music, and satisfaction. It was probably written by Philodemus, an Epicurean thinker, who may have served as the philosopher-in-residence in the library of the grand dwelling. According to a assertion from the Vesuvius Obstacle, “Scholars may possibly get in touch with it a philosophical treatise. But it appears familiar to us, and we can not escape the sensation that the initially textual content we have uncovered is a 2,000-calendar year-aged site submit about how to get pleasure from existence. Is Philodemus throwing shade at the stoics in his closing paragraph, asserting that stoicism is an incomplete philosophy because it has ‘nothing to say about satisfaction?’ The thoughts he seems to discuss—life’s pleasures and what tends to make everyday living well worth living—are nevertheless on our minds right now.” Modern day minds can only wait and dream for the rest of the texts.

A group of college students won the grand prize of the Vesuvius Challenge by deciphering around 2,000 people of an historical scroll charred to a crisp by Mount Vesuvius.
