This incredible accident occurred on Oct 22, 1895 at Montparnasse, then recognised as Gare de l’Ouest. The push of the convey coach from Granville to Paris, hoping to make up time for its 131 passengers, amplified the train’s pace and the air brake unsuccessful.

Upon investigation, it was discovered that the specific train, operated by Chemins de fer de l’Ouest, was designed up of steam locomotive No. 721 (a type 2-4-, French notation 120) hauling 3 baggage vans, a publish van, and six-passenger coaches. The coach had still left Granville on time at 8:45 AM but was quite a few minutes late as it approached its Paris Montparnasse terminus.

In total, a lady in the street under was killed by falling masonry, and two travellers, the fireman, two guards, and a passerby in the road sustained injuries. The woman, Marie-Augustine Aguilard, had been standing in for her husband, a newspaper seller, although he went to collect the evening newspapers. The driver received a fifty franc great.

The locomotive was taken to a repair station and turned out to sustain only slight damages. Finally, the locomotive and the passengers’ automobiles were set once again in service. The Montparnasse derailment was superbly recreated in Martin Scorsese’s movie Hugo.
