Dutch Designer Aldo Bakker Pairs Beauty With Utility

On show at the Carpenter’s Workshop Gallery in New York in April and June of this year, the exhibition ‘Slow Motion’ featured a selection of stools, tables and chairs crafted from a variety of materials—marble, sandstone, gold, silver, and 3D printed aluminum, amongst others. The pieces are each visually distinct; while some appear malleable – with forms folded as if cake batter or putty, others look as if they have been deftly carved from a single block of stone. The atypical design of the collection has not altered the function of its pieces; tables still behave as tables, stools as stools and chairs as chairs. Rather, it offers the potential for people to integrate conceptual design into their domestic space in a way that is both practical and beautiful.
