Vorkuta (Nenets for “the abundance of bears”, “bear corner”) is a coal-mining city in the Komi Republic, Russia, located just north of the Arctic Circle in the Pechora coal basin at the river Vorkuta. Vorkuta is the fourth biggest city north of the Arctic Circle and the easternmost town in Europe. It is also the coldest town in all of Europe, boasting a document cold temperature of -52 levels C (-61 degrees F).

The city of Vorkuta, located in the permafrost belt about 110 miles from the Arctic Ocean, was started by the Vorkuta River just after large coal deposits were being uncovered in the region.
