Miniature art may be small but it’s compelling in its attention to detail—every element of a subject is scaled-down and often able to fit in the palm of your hand. The Beinart Gallery in Melbourne is hosting an exhibition dedicated to creatives that craft these tiny yet mighty works of art. Aptly called Miniature Art Group Show, the exhibition is co-curated by artist Joshua Smith (known for his incredible scaled-down buildings) and features works from 30 artists around the world.
The pieces included range from painting to building models to sculpture. Each highlights the amazing amount of work that goes into their creation. In close-up shots, we take in all of the tiny carved marks, minuscule paint strokes, and barely-there use of materials. The buildings, in particular, represent some of the most impressive qualities of miniature art as they evoke the feeling of being in a structure—a dark, dingy bathroom, for instance—in a small fraction of space.
The Beinart Gallery speaks to why we are so enthralled by miniature art. “The magic is in the invitation extended to the viewer to reimagine the world on an entirely different scale, one in which even Thumbelina might be considered a giant,” they write in a statement. “Miniature art delights the eye and teases the brain with possibility.”
Miniature Art Group Show will be on view from March 7 through March 29, 2020.
