Artist Navid Baraty expresses his love of the solar system with unconventional artworks. Last year, he recreated the cosmos using edible materials including food coloring, coconut milk, and cinnamon, producing photographs that beautifully resembled outer space. Now, the multifaceted artist tells us in an email: “I’m cross-stitching planets based on actual planetary images.”
Baraty’s begun cross-stitching the planets in vibrant colors and intricate details. The well-researched and skillfully crafted embroidery project currently features five planets–Earth, Jupiter, Mars, Neptune, and Pluto (the dwarf planet). Each piece uses a pattern handcrafted by the artist and requires 25 to 35 different thread colors. He intends to finish all eight (or nine) planets and then complete his threaded universe by stitching their moons. (UPDATE: Baraty has completed the nine planets! Scroll down to see them all.)
For those that also want to cross-stitch the universe, Baraty sells PDF versions of his patterns on Etsy.
Baraty has since expanded the solar system series to include all 9 planets.
