California-based artist Erin Hanson creates colorful landscape paintings that pay homage to the American great outdoors. Her latest series has recently been compiled into a 300-page art book, titled Wine Country: Impressions in Oil, and celebrates the beautiful wine regions across California, the Pacific Northwest, Texas, and Virginia.
An avid rock climber and backpacker, Hanson has always had an affinity for nature. She began painting as a young girl, learning oils, acrylics, and watercolor from her teachers. After experimenting with various mediums, she eventually developed her own contemporary style which today is known as “Open-Impressionism.” Her pioneering technique involves confidently applying daubs of impasto paint onto the canvas only once, without layering the colors. Inspired by the natural landscapes she comes across during her adventures, she paints America’s vistas as “abstract mosaics of color and texture.”
Rendered in her signature style, Hanson’s Wine Country series of oil paintings are reminiscent of early Impressionist works, where canvases are covered in thick, textural brush strokes. Mountainscapes are depicted as sunlit rows of rich blue and violet shapes, trees are rendered in dabbled paint strokes, and coastlines feature as swirls of patterned texture. Her artist statement reads: “Like a full-bodied wine, Hanson’s palette is vibrant and rich with texture and light, a sumptuous feast for the senses.”
