Dutch Instagram Account Has People Recreating Famous Artworks While in Quarantine

One of the most popular things to come from the coronavirus quarantine is the Getty Museum Challenge. This creative endeavor has people recreating iconic artworks (throughout history) using the items they already have in their homes.

Although it has gained immense popularity, the Getty Museum Challenge wasn’t the first to introduce the idea to the internet. The Netherlands social account Tussen Kunst & Quarantaine—which translates to “between art and quarantine”—preceded the Getty and has been sharing amazing recreations for months.

With nearly 600 posts (and counting) on Instagram, the submissions to the page run the gamut from Renaissance art to modern photography. While they reflect different eras and artistic styles, they are unified in the approaches that the creative folks have taken to capture their likenesses. Each image shows ingenuity—whether it’s getting the costume just right or interpreting the image for modern times. And some people are a combination of the two; they will, for instance, faithfully recreate an outfit but swap a fancy pleated fabric collar for one made out of toilet paper as a comment on the shortages that began at the beginning of the pandemic.
