Movie-Inspired Paper Cut-Outs Playfully Merge with Household Objects

Avid traveler and artist Rich McCor (aka paperboyo) is known for playfully transforming global landmarks with his paper cut-outs. However, during the coronavirus lockdown, he was forced to stay at home like the rest of us, but that didn’t stop him from creating. He got resourceful, and began creating movie-inspired silhouettes that interact with various objects around his home.

“I usually work with architecture and forced perspective, so translating my ideas to a much smaller scale was a challenge but a fun challenge,” McCor tells My Modern Met. “I realized that there were plenty of opportunities to create images around the house with the same sense of humor and surprise as my exterior photos, so I used the theme of movies as a starting point and then let myself get carried away with it.” From Indiana Jones using a phone charger as his bullwhip to a herd of paper-cut Jurassic World dinosaurs charging across a cheese board, McCor’s indoor series showcases his boundless imagination.

McCor starts with sourcing photos of his subjects online, before turning them into stencils on Adobe Illustrator. He then prints them out and starts the meticulous process of tracing around the design on black card with a craft knife. “It’s both tedious but also relaxing,” says the artist “It became my form of meditation in lockdown because my mind wasn’t on anything while I cut these out. Although saying that, the velociraptors took a few attempts and chewed up a whole afternoon of cutting!”
