Photographer Captures Stunning “Horizontal Rainbow” Filling the Sky With Every Color

If you need something to put a little smile on your face, look no further than this incredible photograph taken at Lake Sammamish in Washington State. While amateur photographer Cessna Kutz has seen a lot of rainbows over the lake, she wasn’t prepared for what appeared as she peeked out of her window one afternoon. Horizontal bands of color spanned the width of the lake, making for a spectacular sight.

Interestingly, this “rainbow” may not actually be a rainbow at all. According to meteorologist Courtney Obergfell, it actually appears to be a circumhorizontal arc. This optical illusion occurs when ice halos are formed by the refraction of sunlight in ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. Also known as a fire rainbow, it can create colorful bands just below the level of the sun.

Even if it’s not a true rainbow, its magical appearance was a welcome distraction for Kutz. “I just felt blessed to be able to witness such an incredible moment,” she tells My Modern Met. “It brought me peace and hope and made me feel less anxious about our current circumstances.”

Fortunately, Kutz decided to share what she observed with the world and the image went viral after she posted it to Facebook. Her zoomed-in photograph shows the sky awash with color, almost as if sending a message of hope to all those stuck indoors at this moment. It’s certainly a message that resonates.

“I honestly had no idea these photos would make the news. I was just wanting to share a beautiful moment I got to witness,” she shares. “I’m super passionate about photography so I’m grateful that God has used my photos to touch people, not only throughout the nation but throughout the world. It’s boosted my photography business as well as make an impact on people so it feels pretty amazing.”
