Self-Isolated School Kids in Japan Hold Their Graduation in Minecraft

For the last 2 weeks, Japanese schools have be closed in a bid to help curb the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Kids must continue to stay at home until after spring vacation (early April), which means many of them will miss out on having a graduation ceremony. However, rather than accept an uneventful end to the school year, a group of creative elementary kids decided to create an online meet-up in the video game Minecraft, so that they can still celebrate the occasion together with their classmates.

The virtual Minecraft graduation ceremony was first discovered after Twitter user @backyennew posted photos and a video of what his son and his friends created. Showing the boxy, pixelated assembly hall and characters, his tweet says (translated from Japanese), “They spent all day online together playing games and laughing. I’m glad they all had fun.”

Amidst this unsettling time, it’s great to see these kids make the most of what they have—creativity can stand strong!
