When real estate mogul Tony Goldman stumbled upon the Miami neighborhood of Wynwood in 2009, he was able to see something that others couldn’t. Over the course of 10 years, Goldman’s vision transformed the area’s anonymous warehouses into blank canvases for some of the world’s best street artists. To mark this anniversary, Wynwood Walls is celebrating with a host of new murals, a retrospective exhibition, and a book that celebrates its achievements.
Today, Jessica Goldman Srebnick sits at the helm of Goldman Properties and carries on her late father’s art patronage. Under her watch, Wynwood Walls has expanded its art program and continued its annual painting series during Art Basel. In 2019, new murals by Kenny Scharf, Faile, Dasic, Buff Monster, and Futura joined an already rich program of public art that has made the area a must-see destination for art lovers coming to Miami.
Wynwood’s artistic development has been documented by legendary street art photographer Martha Cooper since the project’s inception. To celebrate the ten year anniversary, she has selected some of her favorite images of walls past and present. Through her lens, we’re able to relive how these artists push themselves to the limit to go big and express themselves in this open forum.
To round out this special year, Goldman Srebnick worked with art publisher Assouline to produce Walls of Change: The Story of Wynwood Walls. Not only does the book include incredible photographs of Wynwood’s most iconic walls, but it also serves as a platform for the artists themselves to speak on their experience as part of this groundbreaking project. Whether you’ve spent time in Wynwood or have always wanted to go, the book is a great way to bring a piece of street art history home.
