In August 1992, Hurricane Andrew, a Classification 5 storm, wreaked havoc in the Bahamas, Florida, and Louisiana. Ron Magill, the goodwill ambassador and communications director of Zoo Miami, captured the remarkable actions taken to shield the zoo’s flamingos from the storm. On August 23, 1992, Magill and his team moved the total flock of 38 flamingos to the ladies’ restroom, a protected haven with no home windows, a tile ground for quick cleaning, and ample area for the birds.

The restroom was geared up with a prepared supply of refreshing drinking water. The team filled the bathrooms and distribute hay on the floor to make a makeshift bed for the flamingos. Despite the flamingos’ resistance, the staff managed to shift all the birds to the restroom.

Magill, a photography fanatic, couldn’t resist capturing the uncommon sight of the flamingos huddled alongside one another in the restroom. He took a number of pictures with his point-and-shoot digital camera, not knowing then how historic the storm would be or how considerably notice his images would obtain in the aftermath.
