  • Powerful Birth Photos Reveal The Amazing Stories Of Labor Nurses

We’ve shown you the amazing photos of moms giving birth, focusing on the mother’s and her baby’s breathtaking journey. But what got blurred in the background of those, are other amazing stories. And those are the ones of the labor nurses, who play a crucial role in every birth.

The nurses recently took the spotlight on social media after Jill Krause, the writer behind parenting blog Baby Rabies, shared Katie Lacer’s photo of a nurse helping a woman who just gave birth. And it has unearthed a whole portfolio of Krause’s works that capture the emotional and physical intensity of a nurse’s job, while also showing the beauty even in the most difficult of times.

Maybe you have a story of your own on this topic? We’ll be waiting for it in the comments!

Trusting my body and my baby, I recognized when a fearful thought would arise and chose to change it. Absolutely it was incredibly hard, but I was strong – stronger than maybe some skeptics had believed when they found out I was doing a home birth. And sincerely, people’s doubts never offended me. I just felt sad that they didn’t realize the full feminine strength that all women possess. I got to experience it in all its fullness yesterday, and my reward was birthing, not only a baby, but also a mom. _ Bonnie started letting me know she wanted to come meet the world at 5:00 am on Monday, January 2, and my astounding husband and mother helped me labor until about 12:45 pm when I got in our bathtub to push. My little sweet sister joined us then to squeeze my hand and help document the journey. Our midwife, Emily, from Lovers Lane Birth Center, was calming and made me feel strong and safe. The last push was something I’ll never forget – a defining moment in my life. She came out into the water at 1:59 pm and she was perfect. _ Ben and I got a moment alone with this new little angel and I fell even more in love with my sweet husband. I’m reliving yesterday in my head over and over again. It was amazing, and if you are at all interested in a home or natural birth, I’m thrilled to help provide any insight or resources. _ Our little Birdie is 7.5lbs and 20in long with hair already long enough for pigtails. She pooped on me three times in the first two hours of her life, so we know she’s for sure Ben’s daughter…

Their first daughter is 2 years old and they adopted her the day she was born. So it came as a huge surprise when they moved to Hawaii and, at the same time, found out they were pregnant! • German Photographer Shoots Real People Doing Their Daily Tasks Naked, And Here’s A Message Behind It (NSFW)

When Sophia Vogel enters into her subjects’ homes to include them in her photo series With and Without, she asks them what hobbies they’re into. After they say “listening to music” or “playing with my cat”, Sophia asks them to perform the task regularly and then repeat it without any clothes. She snaps photos during both of those times and then presents them for a side-by-side comparison.

“I want to point out that being naked should feel just as natural as being clothed,” she told Creators. “If you think of it right, we are all naked underneath our clothes.”

True, nudity is less of a taboo than it was a couple of decades ago, but seeing a person in his bare flesh still seems voyeuristic. “The pressure of being a sexual being is omnipresent for every human being,” Vogel said. “We are observed and judged every day, and the fashion industry lavishes beauty ideals and criticism on us. We set high standards for ourselves. I want to speak up against these ridiculous standards.”

“By presenting all kinds of different body shapes and natural postures I would love to show that everybody is beautiful in their own way.” Her portraits don’t have any sexual connotation, even though nudity is highly sexualized in our modern society. “I love to present nudity in an aesthetic manner without any sexual context. Not every single nude photograph should be linked to sexuality.”

Her subjects are not models, but regular people who feel connected to Vogel’s project and reached out via Instagram, e-mail, or word-of-mouth. The artist already featured teachers, dentists, attorneys, and other volunteers. Most of them are Millennials: “Right now, I am unfortunately only able to get ahold of the younger generations, but I would love to photograph a wide age range.”

  • A Jewish Photographer Buried These Heartbreaking Photos So Nazis Couldn’t Find Them (NSFW)

In the winter of 1944, at the height of the Holocaust, Jewish photographer Henryk Ross buried a box of photographs in the ground. Just over a year later, he returned to unearth the photos, and the tragic story they told still resonates to this day.

Henryk Ross of Łódź, Poland was a simple news and sports photographer when German forces invaded his city in 1939. From then on, he survived by taking identity photos and propaganda shots for the Nazi Department of Statistics. While on the job, however, he risked his life to secretly document day-to-day events in the Łódź ghetto, which eventually included the deportation of its residents to death camps. Being at risk of a similar fate himself, he buried his photos near his house in a tar-sealed box, preserving evidence of the crimes against his people for future generations.

After the liberation of Łódź by the Soviet Army in 1945, Ross came back to dig up his photos, many of which were damaged or destroyed by ground water. The ones that remained intact, though, provided an intimate look inside the lives of Polish Jews, many of whom met the most unspeakable of ends. They now call the Art Gallery of Ontario home, and live on as a memorial to the victims of the world’s largest genocide. (h/t: boredpanda)

  • Artist Shames Tourists Taking Inappropriate Selfies At The Holocaust Memorial Site In Berlin (NSFW)

Israeli artist Shahak Shapira has seen enough of these disrespectful selfies taken in the absolute worst places for them. So he launched an art project called “Yolocaust” in hopes to shame the selfie-takers from the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin.

“Over the last years, I noticed an interesting phenomenon at the Holocaust memorial in Berlin: people were using it as a scenery for selfies. So I took those selfies and combined them with footage from Nazi extermination camps,” Shapira wrote. He gathered the selfies from the social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Tinder, and Grindr, and then combined them with the hard-to-watch real footage from concentration camps. The artist was shocked by just how distanced from the actual meaning of the monument its visitors were, which is illustrated with the comments, hashtags and “likes” that were posted with the selfies.

“About 10,000 people visit the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe every day. Many of them take goofy pictures, jump, skate or bike on the 2,711 concrete slabs of the 19,000 m² large structure,” Shapira wrote. “The exact meaning and role of the Holocaust Memorial are controversial. To many, the grey stelae symbolize gravestones for the 6 Million Jews that were murdered and buried in mass graves, or the grey ash to which they were burned to in the death camps.”

For those, who found themselves in these photos Shapira offers to take them down upon request through e-mail undouche.me@yolocaust.de.

  • NSFW: Student’s Powerful Art Project Reveals the Lasting Effects of Sexual Assault

Powerful NSFW Art Project Maps the Memory of sexual assault

Nineteen-year-old Emma Krenzer has created a powerful image that depicts the aftermath of sexual assault. The NSFW project explores the idea of a map—in this case, one that that details unwanted touch and advances from family, friends, lovers, and more. To construct the piece, Krenzer took a photo of a friend, printed out a life-sized copy of it, and then used colorful paint to mark the offending areas. Like most maps, Krenzer has provided a key that explains what the different hues represent. When you look at the key and then examine the photo, the visual impact and emotional scars left is overwhelming.

Krenzer’s mixed media artwork was originally created as a project for an art class at her school, Nebraska Wesleyan University. But, its meaning went well beyond an ordinary assignment. “I made this project largely for myself to actually visualize the lasting impact that touch can have on an individual,” she told BuzzFeed. “I thought about what was true for myself, and also, what I perceived to be commonly true for people in general, when I mapped out these touches.”

After completing her piece, Krenzer shared it on Twitter. The response from people around the world was “both heartbreaking and empowering” to her. “Some people told me they burst into tears after viewing the piece and others thanked me repeatedly for creating it,” Krenzer explained. “I really don’t have the words to describe how it makes me feel.”

Her willingness to be open, honest, and most importantly, vulnerable, garnered the global response. Krenzer is now planning on making a series that revolves around the human body and “expressing important messages about it.” By creating visibility for issues like these, she is helping others heal.

    Half-Told Stories

In her series Personal Projects Peruvian photographer, Daniela Muttini depicts the female body in existential situations. Most of the photos play up the contrast between the beauty of the models, bright colours, or spectacular backgrounds and the cruel stories the pictures are intended to tell: Naked bodies covered in tulle, a huddled woman alone in the desert, a pink gun, pink blood.

The observer looks at sceneries of struggle, agony, and determination. Even though you don’t see real wounds, weapons or violence, nearly every motive makes you cringe. Moreover, the level of abstraction incites the viewers’ fantasy and allows an interpretation of the portrayed moment. What has happened to those bodies? What are the untold stories of those persons?

But Muttini is not willing to give any answers. „I like half-told stories; tales with no beginnings or ends, just frozen moments that forge more questions rather than answer anything“, explains Muttini. Instead, she aims at the viewers’ emotions and personal narratives that are provoked by her stunning pictures.

Brock Turner’s Release Inspires A Powerful Anti-Sexual Assault Photoshoot

Brock Turner became famous back in June 2016 for all the wrong reasons. The former student at Stanford University in California was found guilty for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, and what outraged the student community the most was that he was sentenced to just six months jail time and served only half of that before his release.

Yana Mazurkevich, a 20-year-old student at Ithaca College in New York, just couldn’t let this one slide so easily, so she cooperated with the sexual assault awareness media platform called Current Solutions and created an expressive photo series called It Happened, where she’s revealing the more graphical and hard-to-watch side of the whole ordeal.

As Mazurkevich wrote on her Facebook page:

In response to Brock Turner’s early release, this photo series aims to continue the conversation on sexual assault, As well as to raise a huge finger to Turner and his 3-month jail time.
