An Ode To Vietnam And Its Women: Chiron Duong On Its Photographic Project Portraits Of Áo Dài

    [ad_1]

A long, split tunic worn over silk trousers, the Áo Dài is considered the traditional Vietnamese national garment and contains a long history soaked in culture and Vietnamese aesthetics. “Vietnamese women wear Áo Dài on many occasions, such as weddings, traditional holidays, and events. Or sometimes just because they feel like it,” explains Duong; “in one way or another, they all have fond memories of it.” For the project, the photographer looked inwards and infused his images with memories derived from his personal engagements with the item, as well as from those of people around him. “In this series, and with each conceptual shot, I want to tell different stories of Áo Dài,” he says. “Áo Dài in childhood memories, Áo Dài in Vietnamese arts and poetry, Áo Dài in the love for Vietnam, our motherland, Áo Dài in traditional, unique Vietnamese practices, Áo Dài in wartime as the hope for peace, and many more.” Rich in tone and excellently captured in their spontaneous compositions, the photographs showcase the disparate themes as different Vietnamese female subjects dress themselves with the garment. “I purposely asked my models to embody the characters and portray them in their own unique way so that the most genuine expressions would be captured,” he notes. “Whenever I look at the works, it amazes me how beautifully they narrate my story through their very own voices.”

Ben Storms’ Inflated Designs Evoke A Lasting Sense Of Wonder

    [ad_1]

In his vast work, the Belgian designer plays with common notions of materiality, pushing the boundaries of familiar materials to achieve mind-bending pieces that confuse viewers while drawing them in. Storms reinterprets furniture pieces—ranging from table to wall pieces—using cutting-edge manufacturing technologies that alter the appearance and structural properties of materials with unpredictable results. Among his best explorations are ‘In Hale’—a monumental coffee table made of a massive piece of marble gently floating on top of a metal cushion—and ‘Ex Hale’—a marble table which challenges materials associations with solidity and weight by appearing as soft as a cushion. Other awe-inspiring designs include ‘Twin Mirrors’—two identically shaped, wall-mounted inflated mirrors, one in stainless steel, the other in marble, both with distorting reflections—and his ‘In Hale’ and ‘Ex Hale’ wall pieces in cooper, brass or stainless steel, all mimicking the shapes of monumental hanging cushions. In his latest projects, the designer has further expanded on his consistent research into blown shapes, this time using glass—casted and given density akin to natural stone, contradicting in the end result both the transparency and lightness traditionally associated with the material. Poetic and playful, Storms’ designs are more than just sculptural captivating objects, they are an artwork in and of itself, one that challenges our perception of reality and the very concept of design.

My INNER HEALTH Club Boosts The Pathway To Wellbeing With Inner Traditions

    [ad_1]

The launch of your streaming service is accompanied by the campaign ‘Inner Traditions’, for which you spoke with four creatives about which rituals and habits help them stay healthy, focused, and centered. Why these four?

We chose these four visionaries because their way of living aligns with their inner traditions, by which we mean the rituals and regimes that help them stay focused and healthy—they display a sense of calm, balance, and vitality, which is truly inspiring. Designer and architect Andrew Trotter maintains a sense of serenity in his private and professional life, by incorporating open spaces, traditional methods, simplicity, and ensuring his studio’s designs are in harmony with nature. For Claus Sendlinger, who is the founder of Design Hotels and a co-founder of the creative community Slow, food is at the heart of his healthy lifestyle. He has given up all industrialized, processed foods and chosen to nourish his body in a way that’s more in-tune with what he really needs rather than what’s easy and convenient. Fahrani Pawaka Empel is a designer and model who maintains her energy levels through meditation, sound healing, gratitude practice, and tarot. And Bruno Sitton was transformed when he discovered Zen on his global travels as a model. He now specializes in tea ceremonies, meditation, and creating and sharing experiences with others in order to lead a life of greater vitality.

What lessons did you take away from them?

The lesson we can all learn from these four inspiring people is that by returning to a simpler life that’s more in tune with nature and our own basic needs, we are committing to prioritizing and preserving our mental and physical health. What could be more important than that?

Casa Mate By Araujo Galvan Arquitectos Is A Study Of Simplicity And Refinement

    [ad_1]

The 480-square-meter dwelling is accessed by an ample entrance terrace, which leads to the property’s kitchen and living area. Beautifully enclosed by floor-to-ceiling glazing, this opens, in the back, to a vast central garden with a minimalist concrete swimming pool and an intimate terrace conceived for conversations around a fire pit. Various rooms and functions are arranged around the garden, including domestic spaces, open air and flexible areas. With gallery-like, tall double-height ceilings, the main bedroom is connected to the terrace through an external corridor and offers tranquil views towards one of the more intimate side gardens. Equally conceived with isolation and quietude in mind, three more bedrooms are found in the back volume. Arranged on two floors, they feature private terraces in rustic stone dotted by pots and trees. At Casa Mate, everything is enveloped in clean surfaces, giving the complex a crisp feel of modern minimalist architecture. Concrete, wood, and marble are the main materials, while granite details and neutral colors wrap the interior in calming textures—allowing the architecture to become the project’s real protagonist. Sleek furniture, large openings, and greenery throughout the spaces reinforce the overall sense of warmth and calm while adding colorful accents and a soft contrast to the perceived harshness that otherwise defines the concrete structure.

From shimmering skyscrapers and astro-turf carpets to monotonous rows of grey computer boxes offset by dusty pink walls, the Instagram account @__________office has all of the workplace tropes we grew up seeing in movies and on TV, but didn’t get to experience ourselves.

Dedicated to the documentation of the ostentatiously retro interior design of the late ’80s and early-mid ’90s—the Microsoft 95 era—this account offers a passage through time to the corporate scenery of the late 20th century. Thet archivist behind the account—they would prefer to remain anonymous—scans images from an array of vintage books and magazine sought out from second-hand book shops; a second-hand market in the curator’s small home town in Italy is another creative source.

In 1952, German aircraft engineer Fritz Fend (April 14, 1920 – November 22, 2000), a previous technical officer with the Luftwaffe in World War 2, took his design for a Kabinenroller (Cabin Scooter) to the Messerschmitt aircraft company.

Prohibited from manufacturing aircrafts after Earth War II (Germany was forbidden to manufacture plane right until 1955), Messerschmitt wanted products to maintain its factories working. The enterprise appreciated the concept. Fend added another seat, and in 1955, the 3-wheeled Messerschmitt KR200 hit the highway.

Some 40,000 Kabinenroller versions rolled out between 1955 and 1964.
