A Relationship Ends On Film, Sydney Krantz Captures Two Months On The Road With Joe

Los Angeles-based photographer Sydney Krantz is interested in photographing reality, but perhaps not in the traditional sense. In her series ‘How do you not know where you are?’ she documents the disintegration of a relationship without ever photographing herself with her partner.

Shot over two months, the series strangely evokes feelings of dissociation and separation through its abstract content—though the images are of a road trip, they are tinted with melancholia. Krantz explains the collection of images and the emotions of the series most adequately, writing: “This series of photos was taken during a two-month-long road trip across the US with a guy named Joe. Joe and I were dating when the trip began. About half-way through, we were getting annoyed with each other about trivial things; it was becoming clear to the both of us that this wasn’t working out. I was overcome with guilt. Here I was, witnessing the most extraordinary places our country has to offer, yet all I could think about was my own loneliness and rejection. Looking through these images, it is clear that the camera captured my truest feelings.”
