A Renovation Transforms This Dark Home Into A Sanctuary Of Light

Bangkok-based architecture firm A Millimetre has redesigned ‘HSH House’, a residential home in Bangkok, Thailand, featuring a white steel facade with multiple uses that “bring people together”.

The two level, 150 square meter house is situated in a busy residential area of Bangkok, where security was of importance to the client. According to the architects, with small windows and a dull interior, the original house lacked privacy, natural light and ventilation. The motivation for renovation then was to redesign the interior as open plan, with more concealment from the street, but also more brightness. The vertical steel battens covering the exterior of the property work as a security wall, separating the public outdoors from the inside of the property. Residents can look out, and although there is space between each panel, passers-by cannot see in. The space between the panels allows light to flood into the house. Inside, rooms have been combined to create light, multi-purpose spaces. “We wanted to have a double space area linking other spaces and rooms together”, explain the architects. A skylight and large windows were installed to further incorporate natural light, and an enclosed terrace exists as a hidden outdoor space for social gatherings. ‘HSH House’ is a forward-thinking example of a private dwelling making use of space in an increasingly costly urban city like Bangkok.
