However for the the greater part of Levitt’s illustrious job (lasting right up until the 1990s), she ventured out of the underground to doc existence on Manhattan streets. She captured reliable moments — children participating in on the sidewalk or dressing up for Halloween, a team of women of all ages gossiping — in neighborhoods such as Harlem, the Decrease East Facet, and the Garment District.

Levitt spoke about her early photographs shot on the streets in the 1930s: “It was a fantastic neighborhood for getting photographs in these days, because that was in advance of tv. There was a good deal happening. And the more mature people today would be sitting out on the stoops since of the heat. Those people neighborhoods have been quite active.”

The New York Moments, in 2009, explained her as: “a major photographer of the 20th century who caught fleeting moments of surpassing lyricism, mystery and peaceful drama on the streets of her native New York”.
