At The Edge Of A Forest, House With Three Eyes Offers Views Of Austria’s Rhine Valley

The house is located in a secluded area by the edge of a forest above Weiler, a village in western Austria close to the border of Switzerland. “Only a handful of farmers settled in the area over the centuries,” explains the firm. “Following tradition, they all used timber to build their farmhouses.” The new home replaces a dilapidated farmstead that had been abandoned half a century ago. In keeping with tradition, the exterior is clad entirely in timber—with sections covered in an envelope of intricate timber latticework—except for three large circular windows that give the project its title. “Daylight enters the room through these three big windows,” they say. “Each points to a different geographic direction and invites different landscapes into the room: mountain, valley, tree.” A generously sized outdoor terrace opens the kitchen and dining spaces out onto the lawn. Inside, the open-plan space is designed with a modern interior, whereby different living spaces—an office area, reading room, bar, and living area, are integrated together around a suspended fireplace.
