Base 10’s Kodama Collection Features Geometric Forms And Blackened Timber

Space 10 was formed by woodworked and sculptor Joshua Friedman in collaboration with Lindsey Muscato. Their architecturally-inspired pieces exist as abstractions of
tables, stools, and consoles, constructed from repurposed California redwood and composed using the principles, methods, and hand-tools of traditional Japanese wood joinery and timber-framing. “Base 10 furniture is made with deliberate simplicity and exacting detail, respectful of the inherent grace in the traditions we engage and the materials we work with,” explains a statement from the duo. The monolithic compositions are blackened using a combination of natural alchemical patination and yakisugi; the darkening and sealing of the wood via spot burning. The title of the collection ‘Kodama’ refers to the loose translation from Japanese folklore of wood spirits or ‘spirits of the trees’.
