Buero Wagner’s Modular Black House Opens Out To The Neighboring Forest

Encompassing an 80 square meter plot, ‘The Black House’ directly adjoins to a larger family home next door, yet is distinguished as an independent building. The modular residence is characterized by its carbonized wood facade, with rooms of different heights stacked together to create a variety of spatial situations. Inside, the emphasis is on a look of naturalness: all fittings including the kitchen, stairs, cupboards, and doors, are made from untreated, oiled oak, interspersed with sandblasted concrete walls. “The house plays with opposing aspects such as inside and outside, and top and bottom”, explains lead architect Fabian Wagner to IGNANT. “Due to its shape and the sparing use of materials, it has a purist and clear feel”, he notes. A bedroom and open bathroom are located on the basement floor, while at ground level, the kitchen and dining area open out to a paved terrace via sliding glass walls.
