Portuguese architecture firm Mário Martins Atelier’s latest venture is ‘Casa Carrara’, a white stone house framed by a 30-meter long terrace overlooking the Atlantic ocean.
‘Casa Carrara’ is located in Praia de Luz, a picturesque stretch of the Portuguese coastline known to be a popular choice among those looking for holiday home destinations. The area features a number of homes designed by Mário Martins Atelier, including ‘Casa Colunata’ and ‘Casa Elíptica’. All three residential designs by the practice are defined by sculptural forms and are built using the same pure white stone.
The terrace, which acts both a frame for the house and a form of protection from bright sunlight was an integral part of the design process. It adds structure and shape to the building, establishing what the designers call a “physical relationship of the rooms”, becoming what they see as the “finishing element” of the impressive home.
At the heart of ‘Casa Carrara’ is the commitment to simple, linear design. White natural stone has been used all over the exterior, interspersed with marble and dynamic forms such as the white block that juts out over the water.
