Alli Williams is a Los Angeles-based cosplayer and for this year’s International Women’s day she decided to break any stereotypes about Disney Princesses being bad role models.
As today’s society strives every day to empower women, International Women’s day becomes not only a celebration but also a day to motivate women and show them they can make a change in the world.
According to Alli herself, ‘The true spirit of a princess has little to do with her glittering gowns and fairy godmother; the power of the princess is in her kindness, bravery, and sense of adventure. The trouble with fairy tales is that the stories are set in patriarchal eras in fantasy lands. Critics attack Disney Princesses for being bad role models, when in fact, these characters are strong, inspirational role models.’ So for this photo shoot, her goal was to show the real heroes that Disney Princesses are, and imagine what would they be in today’s modern society based on their unique personalities.
Not only Disney Princesses but also Barbie dolls are often considered as bad role models, so for this year’s International Women’s day, Barbie has decided to release 17 new dolls based on famous inspiring women like Frida Kahlo. You can read more about it here.
