In ‘Emergent Behavior’, San Francisco-based photographer Thomas Jackson captures hovering art installations inspired by the self-organizing systems of the insect and animal worlds.
Schools of fish, swarming birds and termite mounds have all inspired Jackson’s installations. Mundane objects such as ring binders, balloons, plastic cups and straws are used to represent the pack-like nature of such creatures. Jackson succeeds in transforming typical scenes into a somewhat surreal dreamscape, his colorful and energetic flocks racing through each image. ‘Emergent Behavior’ seeks to fuse the fear and fascination the natural phenomena evoke. Jackson explains, “By constructing the installations from unexpected materials and placing them where they seem least to belong, I aim to tweak the margins of our visual vocabulary, and to invite fresh interpretations of everyday things.”
