Exploring The Relationship Between People And Objects

As a graduate of MA Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins, Xiang Guan is constantly rethinking the way people interact with objects. In his project ‘Symbiotic Objects’, he takes this a step further by exploring the way objects can interact with people–in fact, this innovative furniture only functions with human interaction. Comprised of a chair, desk and lamp component, the set presents reduced, abstract forms that come to life when a person holds them together. This forms a new symbiotic relationship, as a person has to support the objects in a manner that reflects the furniture’s assistance for the person working, communicating and playing. Focusing on ‘emotional durability’, ‘sustainability’ and ‘ambiguity’, Xiang Guan’s ‘Symbiotic Objects’ pave the way for more thoughtful interactions with the objects and world around us.
