Originally from Israel, New York-based Ron Gilad is a contemporary conceptual designer. His work bridges the gap between furniture and art, creating pieces that appear to be simple black line drawings. Gilad’s sculptural objects bring graphic outlines to life and play with perspective, confusing a viewer’s desire to seek reason in their structure. While some pieces are explicitly created for functional means, such as the tables with glass and metal surfaces, others are whimsical but intelligent abstractions of space, in an area defined by the designer. Gilad is committed to creating ‘functional conversation pieces’–his work both combines and creates tension between essences of minimalism and practicality.
