Super Matcha · Seoul, South Korea

[ad_1]

Formerly an area of Seoul known for large warehouses and factory buildings, Seongdong-gu is today regarded as an eclectic area where small cafes and restaurants can be found. Opened in 2019, ‘Super Matcha’ is an open-plan cafe with a focus on one signature ingredient: matcha. For Creative Studio Unravel, the design of the cafe began with exploring the concept of space; carefully considering the use of not just objects and furniture but also aromas and senses. “When the scent and spirit of matcha melt into the empty area, the ‘nature’ of matcha finally remains alone,” they state. The paired-back approach to the interior results in an open-plan, minimalist space where an abundance of light gives way to clean, geometric lines. Steel, glass, and cement are the predominant materials used here. A retractable glass wall stretching the length of the building is a thoughtful feature; enabling the space to be opened out, seamlessly linking the interior with the exterior. The design of the cafe keeps to a monochrome palette, allowing the vivid green of matcha to stand out. This Brutalist yet inviting interior offers a calming environment where visitors can experience unique drinks with few distractions.
