The Stokkøya Cabin Sits Settled Into The Hillside Of A Remote Norwegian Island

The ‘Stokkøya Cabin’ was designed to take advantage of its position on a steep and relatively exposed plot of land. By working with the landscape rather than against it, Kappland Arkitekter has created a space that does not forgo sheltered outdoor areas or views—but rather, achieves both. Split across stepped levels, the unique shape of the building defines two external areas whose opposing orientation allows them to be used in different weather conditions.

The cabin is centered around a flexible central living area and offers views across the sea towards Linesøya and to the rocky landscape to the north. Designed for a family of five, the floor plan has been cleverly devised to maximize space and storage. A majority of the furniture was designed specifically for the cabin; constructed from the same birch wood that clads the walls, floor, and ceiling. The pared-back aesthetic of the interior is deliberate, the architects did not want anything that might compete with the magnificent landscape visible from every room in the cabin.
