In 1989, Madonna sang the song “Express Yourself,” imploring listeners to do just that. Fashion photographer Vincent Flouret has taken her advice and even included the legendary singer in his creative pursuits. Through a charming project he calls Maxdonna, he captures some of Madonna’s most iconic moments—from album covers to music video performances—and replaces her with his adorable dog, Max.

Flouret’s furry friend is a natural when it comes to channeling the reigning Queen of Pop. He’s able to mimic the sultry looks and the breathless poses that aided in defining Madonna’s career. It also helps that Flouret was able to recreate costumes to give each image another level of authenticity. The results convey the essence of each Madonna original, but they didn’t come easy; Maxdonna is a labor of love. “These pictures, between the shoots, the homemade costumes, the training took me 8 months to do,” Flouret explained.

So, how does Max like participating in this project? Flouret makes sure that he’s enjoying himself and has an ingenious way of doing so. “He is my priority,” he says. “Everything is like a game for him so yes, for example, if he needs a hat for a picture, I buy it weeks before and we play with it like if it’s one of his pet toys. And so, it’s ‘normal’ and fun for him when we shoot for real weeks later.”

It turns out that Flouret and Max’s hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. Madonna herself has admired Maxdonna and even shared it on social media. “She posted the Like a Virgin cover on her Instagram. I was like a kid when I discovered it!”
