Each of these vibrantly-coloured works features a pair of human hands clutched all over two knitting needles. Bordering them are levels of textured materials that link the palms to the craft they are creating. “My collection of will work involving ‘hands knitting themselves’ were being at first encouraged by the M.C. Amazingly, Milne manages to render not only the hands with thorough realism but also the knitted material. To create these pieces, she casts the sculpture in glass using the shed wax casting approach. A refractory mould is created close to the wax and the wax is melted out of the mildew. Then, the mold is transferred to a kiln and the glass is melted into the place wherever the wax was, immediately after which, the mold is destroyed to reveal the last glass product.
“The function serves as a metaphor for social construction,” Milne continues. “Individual strands are weak and brittle on their individual, but deceptively sturdy when certain collectively. You can crack or crack single threads devoid of the total composition slipping aside. And even when the structure is damaged, items keep on being bound with each other. The connections are what carry energy and integrity to the total and what retain it intact.”
Milne finds that the attractiveness and vulnerability of glass can also be applied to men and women and the threat of local weather transform as effectively. “Like glass, we are simultaneously sturdy and fragile,” she states. “Our lives rely on balancing our requires with people of our earth. Like glass threads that are quickly shattered, individually we are just about powerless, but by operating jointly, we have great energy.”
