Textile artist Jessica Long stitches impeccable botanical designs onto striking double hoops. Each of her wreath-like creations contains its own unique arrangement of flowers, leaves, branches, and sometimes birds.

Long picked up the art of hand embroidery when she was on maternity leave. The artist had recently moved to Washington, and most of her art supplies were still in storage, so she began purchasing embroidery kits off of Etsy. Long fell in love with the three-dimensionality and texture of the medium and continued developing her skills by creating her own original patterns. This passion project eventually blossomed into a small business, where the embroidery artist sells all-inclusive kits based on her designs.

Lavish botanical motifs play a large part in Long’s embroidery art practice. Her love of natural life actually stems from her degree in biology. What makes her art truly stand out, however, is the second hoop she adds at the center of her fabric. Before starting the embroidery process, Long binds the chosen fabric to two different sized hoops—placing the smaller one at the center. Then, after embroidering her floral design, she cuts the unused fabric from the center and glues the remaining pieces to the back of the central hoop. As a result, her vibrant botanical illustrations are transformed into whimsical embroidered wreaths.

You can purchase the artist’s embroidery kits, patterns, and supplies via Long’s Etsy, and keep up to date with her latest creations by following her on Instagram.
