Artist Paints Black and White Portraits of Prehistoric Animal Skeletons

Animals are among the best creative muses. Today, some artists try to return the favor by raising awareness of endangered species in their work. Others, like London-based German artist Katharina Barth, are shining a light on extinct animals from prehistoric times.

As a “passionate animal lover and horse rider,” Barth draws most of her inspiration from the natural world. Most recently, this zeal has translated into a series of eye-catching black and white oil paintings of prehistoric skeletons. Barth paints dinosaurs like the Tyrannosaurus Rex, as well as mammals like the Smilodon, or saber-toothed tiger. To achieve the luminescent glow to her paintings, she employs a combination of oil paint and spray paint in shades of silver and grey and keeps the background in soft focus. As a result, these skeleton portraits inherit a timeless quality, resembling stills from black and white films.

Barth, who graduated from DLD College London in Fine Art and Photography in 2012, is now pursuing a BA in Painting in Central London.
