If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to crochet, we’ve got the perfect starter project. Kate Kobets (of Toysneed) has created this adorable baby turtle with a removable shell, and she’s selling the DIY pattern and instructions on Etsy. The completed doll makes a great gift for a baby or young child, and anyone can make this super-cute character at home.

“I really love the forest and the sea, nature is my source of energy,” Kobets tells My Modern Met. “I also love children’s books, illustrations, and fairytales.” Additionally, the talented crafter is influenced by the material she uses. “I just take the yarn in my hands and imagine who I would like to crochet from it,” she explains. “Often, when an image appears in my head, I cannot calm down until I see it in reality. I even started a separate notebook for my ideas, where I write down everything that comes to mind. Then I go back to the notes and draw inspiration.”

Kobets has been crocheting from a young age, and she even designed her own crochet clothes in the past. In 2014, she came across the art of amigurumi, a term that blends two Japanese words: ami, which means crocheted or knitted; and nuigurumi, a stuffed doll. It wasn’t until she gave birth to her son in 2017 that she decided to turn her curiosity for amigurumi into something more. She began creating crochet toys, and hasn’t looked back since. Today, she sells both completed toys and patterns for all sorts of crochet critters.

“It is important for me that children play with my toys,” says Kobets. “The name Toysneed itself can be deciphered as toys that are needed. I try to make the toy not only beautiful and of high quality, but also interesting and useful.” Almost every toy she makes has movable or removable elements, such as legs, arms, or clothes. In the case of her adorable turtle toy, the whole shell can be removed, as if it has its own little backpack.
