Artist Reorganizes Found Organic Objects Into Visually Satisfying Arrangements

Satisfying Flat Lay Art by Kristen Meyer

Connecticut-based prop stylist and designer Kristen Meyer creates geometric flat lay art using found organic materials. From broken pieces of egg shells and crackers to flower petals, pebbles, and leaves, Meyer creates mesmerizing patterns by meticulously placing each piece inside perfect circles and squares.

Each satisfying composition is set against pastel-colored backgrounds, where Meyer’s clever use of negative space completes the shapes, through the suggestion of crisp geometric boundaries. Soft, soothing color palettes complement the range of textures in the deconstructed objects. Describing her process as “nature meets scissors,” some pieces are created using the natural shape of the objects, while others require precision snips to achieve the artist’s perfectionist aesthetic.

In one piece, lines of differing lengths of dry spaghetti sticks that have been positioned in a perfect circle, result in what looks like a gold coin. Another piece—formed from dried up autumn leaves—expresses Meyer’s belief in “beauty in imperfection.” While others would just discard them on a compost heap, Meyer instead celebrates them through careful arrangements inside a frame-like square composition. The artist reveals, “I can’t go for a walk in the woods without bringing home a leaf or two or three.”
