Discovering previous textbooks is like locating hidden treasure for numerous literary fans. But for French artist Inès Mélia, they give the perfect canvas for her artwork. She finds abandoned guides on the streets of Paris and transforms them into charming tissue containers. By means of her series, titled Domestic Existence, Mélia “question[s] the mundane with humor, and check out[s] how creative imagination can expose the possibles in the real—oh as well actual.”

There’s something rather somber about previously loved books that have been kicked to the curb, but Mélia finds a meta resolution to that sadness with her artistry. By turning “cult castoff books” into tissue bins, the books themselves appear to be to mourn their have past lives. In a bid to give each novel a new lease on everyday living, Mélia lovingly transforms them into performs of artwork. The artist cuts out holes in their challenging handles, and decorates them with seeds and other found elements.

Inside, the webpages are changed with a handkerchief that is been embroidered with one of the book’s previous sentences. For a book termed Burns’ Poems, the handkerchief is hand-stitched with the phrases, “Oh my luve’s like a red, crimson rose.” And in one more piece, Mélia involves a quotation from the French model of Ernest Hemingway’s Fifty Grand (Cinquante Mille Dollars).
