American singer-songwriter Billie Eilish has recently released her new music video for you should see me in a crown, made in collaboration with contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. Only Apple Music subscribers can watch the full video, but a 30-second preview clip was recently released, giving us all a taste of what the creative duo have been up to.
The collaboration between the 17-year-old Los Angeles-born pop star and the 57-year-old Japanese contemporary artist might sound unusual, but the pair have worked together before. Earlier this year, the duo worked on a GARAGE MAGAZINE cover feature, and Eilish is often seen wearing Murakami’s fashion designs.
The animated video features a giant anime version of Eilish turning into a grotesque spider monster, as well as Murakami’s signature rainbow-hued smiling flowers. Murakami reveals in a statement, “Eight months from start to finish, I sprinted throughout the production process with my animation team striving to realize Billie’s vision in an unprecedented way.” Meanwhile, Eilish describes Murakami as an “incredible visionary.” She adds, “It was such an honor to collaborate with him and have our brains and our worlds collide for this video.”
