Celebrities and Artists are Having Fun with the #DollyPartonChallenge

If you’ve been on social media over the past few days, you might’ve noticed the #DollyPartonChallenge taking over your feed. The format is simple: a square is divided into four equal parts that are each labeled LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and Tinder (or Grindr). To participate, you simply fill an image in each quadrant that highlights the distinct but often subtle difference in your profile picture based on which social media site it appears on.

The wildly popular meme got its start from the imitable Dolly Parton (hence the name). On January 21, 2020, she posted the four pictures of herself and captioned it, “Get you a woman who can do it all.” It went viral (with over a million likes and counting) and a meme was born.

Everyone, from celebrities to artists to cultural institutions, is posting their own versions of the #DollyPartonchallenge. Actors are using their different roles to fill social media profiles while artists are creating their own versions using their work as inspiration. The popular Instagram account Sad Animal Facts made one of our favorite iterations. Its creator, Brooke Barker, illustrated a penguin posing for its different profiles and even included the bird holding a fish for its Tinder picture—a nod to a real-life phenomenon in which guys on Tinder, Bumble, etc., seem to frequently post photos holding a fish (they may or may not have caught).
