Cinematic Photos Captured in Naturally Dramatic and Diverse Landscapes of Iceland

Jay and Vicki Philbrick are portrait and wedding photographers based in New Hampshire. Their company, Philbrick Photography allows them to pursue their passion full-time, but one of their favorite pastimes is creating photo shoots in incredible locations. So, when one of their favorite models, Sarah Maillett, called to let them know she was taking a trip to Iceland and suggested they come along, the husband and wife team jumped at the opportunity.

After coordinating the shoot from abroad, the team was met with challenges, as they faced heavy and wind in addition to unseasonably cold temperatures. Luckily, both model and photographers persevered to capture some spectacular shots of Sarah set against the beauty of Iceland. Throughout the team’s two weeks in Iceland, they traveled to a variety of location, adapting their shoot around inclement weather, which often made it difficult for Sarah to stand on her feet.

The resulting images are dramatic and daring, sparking new creative ideas from the team. “It was great being in a totally new kind of environment. Neither Vicki or myself had ever seen such locations and Iceland may now be our favorite place that we have ever visited and we’ve been to many countries,” Jay shares with us via email. “It was extremely inspiring to be able to work with Sarah in so many new and exciting locations.”

With Iceland being such a popular destination for tourists and photographers, Jay and Vicki had to get creative with their angle and plan their shooting times strategically, often arriving before dawn when locations were less hectic. “Sometimes we had to really finesse her position or in the worst cases absolutely forego a location and find something else nearby,” Philbrick writes us. “While this may not have been optimum, it wasn’t a huge problem as nearby all the major famous locations are many lesser-known locations that were quite empty of people and other photographers. These locations were often just as fantastic as their nearby, famous neighbors.”

Jay and Vicki Philbrick spent two weeks traveling around Iceland to get these dramatic photographs of their model set in the Icelandic landscape.

“Our favorite location was probably the Fjaðrárgljúfur gorge, due to the fact that while much of Iceland reminded us of Middle-earth or some other otherworldly location, this gorge did that even to a greater degree. It was like nothing we had ever seen anywhere.”
