Ukrainian textile artist Ludmila Perevalova stitches colorful embroidery designs that look like landscape paintings inspired by Impressionist masters like Claude Monet. Each colorful design captures the beauty of the artwork it’s based on, as well as the vibrant energy of nature.

Perevalova first learned how to embroider from her mother when she was a child. Now that she’s retired, she spends time perfecting her craft every day—and her hard work certainly shows. Each embroidery design boasts a combination of long and short stitches in a variety of colors to produce the same qualities as expressive brushstrokes.

Just like the Impressionists that influence her work, Perevalova is inspired by her surrounding nature. She says, “I live near the sea at home with a little flower garden, that every day gives me inspiration to create some goods.” While she often creates her own designs, many of her works are based on famous paintings. For one design, Perevalova reimagines Monet’s The Undergrowth in the Forest of Saint-Germain (1882) in thread. Featuring a blend of colorful hues, her stitches look just like stippled oil paint on a canvas. Another piece is inspired by The Isle of Ouessant by Henry Moret. Perevalova renders the pretty seascape in countless, overlapping stitches to achieve the effect of dappled sunlight.
